The Simplicity and Freedom of Eating a Whole Foods Diet

Published on: 03/23/2023

In a world where ultra-processed foods reign supreme, it can be easy to get used to all the grab and go options available to us. However, a whole foods diet can offer a range of advantages for our health and well-being. In this blog post, we’ll explore the simplicity and freedom of eating a whole foods diet, and why it might be worth considering.

What is a whole foods diet?

First, let’s define what we mean by a whole foods diet. Essentially, this refers to a way of eating that focuses on consuming foods in their natural and unprocessed state. This means avoiding highly processed and refined foods, and instead opting for meat, eggs, fish, poultry, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

Ahhh…the simplicity

One of the key advantages of a whole foods diet is its simplicity. Unlike many fad diets or complicated meal plans, a whole foods diet is easy to understand and follow. There are no strict rules or complicated calculations to worry about – simply aim to eat a variety of nutrient-dense whole foods, and avoid anything that has been heavily processed or contains artificial ingredients.

Easier said than done, right?!  Maybe…maybe not.

“It’s next to impossible!”

The other day I was sitting with a client, discussing the benefits of adopting a whole foods diet. At first he scoffed at the idea, saying it was next to impossible, citing the fact that most foods contain multiple ingredients.  In our culture, even the health-conscious pride themselves in their label-reading skills.  But what if you adopted a way of eating that didn’t involve reading labels very often because most of the foods you consumed didn’t have labels?  This is what I explained to my client, and by the end of our session, he was ready, willing, and felt able to do just what I was suggesting.

Eliminates temptations

This simplicity can be liberating, as it eliminates the temptations you may face when you enter a grocery store and feel bombarded by all the choices. If you know you’re not buying most of the packaged foods in the store, your choices shrink immensely, and you can focus on the foods you know you can and should eat.

Function optimally

Another benefit of a whole foods diet is the freedom it offers. By avoiding processed foods and focusing on natural ingredients, we’re able to nourish our bodies with the nutrients they need to function optimally. This can lead to increased energy levels, improved digestion, reduced risk of chronic health conditions, the ability to eliminate or prevent the need for some medications, weight loss, and a greater sense of overall well-being.

It’s highly customizable

Moreover, a whole foods diet can be highly customizable, as it allows us to tailor our food choices to our individual needs and preferences. Whether we’re vegan, vegetarian, paleo, or anything in between, we can find a whole foods approach that works for us.

What are the downsides?

Of course, like any dietary approach, there are potential downsides to a whole foods diet. It can require more time and effort to prepare meals from scratch, and it might be more expensive.  It can also present challenges when it comes to eating out, but that is a skill that can be learned.

Refreshing change

However, for many people, the simplicity and freedom of a whole foods diet can be a refreshing change from the restrictive and complicated diets that are so often promoted in the media. By focusing on natural, unprocessed foods, we can nourish our bodies and support our overall health and well-being. So why not give it a try? You might be surprised at how good it feels to keep things simple and wholesome.

Although I’ve been a dietitian for more than 20 years, it’s the past few years that have convinced me to take control of my own health by changing the way I eat. So many chronic illnesses can be corrected or prevented through good nutrition. I am thankful to have the opportunity to walk with people in my community, Beaufort, SC and beyond, through their own journeys as they reclaim their health.
